The Cone family built their fortune right here in North Carolina in the textile industry. The sisters Dr. Claribel and Miss Etta Cone supported the work of Matisse and other artists in the early 1900s before their style was appreciated by most critics. Great lovers of art, the sisters displayed their collection in their adjoining apartments in Baltimore until Etta bequeathed the entire collection to the Baltimore Museum of Art. The exhibit will also feature an interactive virtual tour of their Baltimore homes were the art was originally displayed.
