The weather is warming up and that means it’s time to get outside! There’s no shortage of outdoor activities in Durham. Whether you want to hike in nature or enjoy a baseball game in an urban setting, Durham packs a lot into a day outside. Keep reading for the best things to do in the Durham area to get some fresh air.
The Best Outdoor Activities in Durham
1. Hiking in State Parks
The Eno River State Park runs along its namesake river and offers nearly 30 miles of hiking trails. There are several loops that range from half a mile to about four miles. If you’re looking for more of a challenge, the Laurel Bluffs Trail is a little over six miles one way and is a part of the Mountains-to-Sea State Trail.
Travel just a little further for a mountain getaway! Occoneechee Mountain State Natural Area claims the highest peak in Orange County. The Occoneechee Mountain Loop Trail is a 2.2-mile loop that climbs steep terrain and rewards you with a beautiful view over the Eno River. The park also offers great fishing in both the river and ponds.
2. Kayaking / Canoeing
Flatwater paddling is a wonderful way to explore the Eno River and get a glimpse of wildlife. West Point on the Eno Park sits along two scenic miles of the river. We recommend putting your kayak or canoe in just upstream from the dam and paddling to Sennett Hole. The Eno River Boat Launch is also an easy place to put in. From there, you can paddle upstream to the Little River or downstream to Falls Lake. Both ways are about two miles.
We recommend renting a kayak or canoe plus all the gear from Frog Hollow Outdoors. From lakes to creeks, they offer self-guided trips and guided tours.
3. Picnicking
Picnicking is a great way to get some fresh air in Durham. Take a five-minute drive from Arrowhead Inn to the Little River Regional Park and Natural Area for a waterfront picnic. For a more urban setting, American Tobacco Campus offers a view of the historic Lucky Strike water tower along with the calming sounds of a man-made waterfall. The area also hosts live music events. If you prefer to be surrounded by flowers, try the Sarah P. Duke Garden.
4. Baseball
Grab your blue and burnt orange and enjoy a day of cheering on the Bulls! The Durham Bulls Athletic Park seats 10,000 people and provides all your concessions needs like beer and hotdogs. They also have themed games, from dog-friendly nights, and their take on Thirsty Thursday with Beats, Brews & Baseball.
